Guadalmesí River

The Guadalmesi River rises south of the Sierra de Luna, then drops 600 meters in a mere seven kilometers to flow into the Mediterranean. As it passes through the Alcornocales Natural Park the river carves deep, narrow valleys, known as Canutos in Spanish. Here you will enjoy a rare treat; the predominant vegetation is laurel, typical of subtropical forests that mostly disappeared in Europe after the climate changes of the last glaciations. The highest levels of this path offer a breathtaking view of the Straight of Gibraltar. But keep one eye on the skywatch; this is a main flyway for migratory birds.
